I was in the neighbourhood of Museumpark, in Rotterdam. Thought I pop by to the Erasmus MC to check out an art installation that I have been curious to witness in person.
It is about a clock!
Video: a five-second time-lapse recording which represents about a minute and a half of actual time on a clock.
This is the “Sweepers Clock” by Dutch artist Maarten Baas. It features two handymen diligently pushing lines of debris, marking the hours and minutes, presented in real-time.
Basically, it is a twelve-hour long film indicating time as they sweep garbage. The performance is shown on both sides of the clock.
So, there I was standing in the middle of the waiting area, on the ground floor a hospital, staring at a clock. I was completely mesmerized! 😲

If this artwork seems familiar to you … that is because Maarten Baas is the same artist behind that three-meter-high performance art clock, Schiphol Clock, hanging in Lounge 2, at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport. The one that features a man in blue overalls redrawing the clock’s hands with a roller and paint. The video took exactly 12 hours to film as well.
Not forgetting another of his creation the Grandfather Clock at Rijksmuseum!
