So, I was visiting Museum Vught – a former and the only SS concentration camp outside Nazi Germany during the Second World War.
And this striking building was right next to it.
It says “Justitiele Inrichtingen Vught”.
“Something justice institution?”, I asked out loud.
“It’s a prison!”, replied my hubby.
That makes absolute sense! LOL
Of course, I had to find out more.
Justitiele Inrichtingen Vught is the Penitentiary Institution Vught, formerly known as Nieuw Vosseveld. The history of the facility goes back to 1942 when the German occupier set up a concentration camp at this location under the name Durchgangslager Herzogenbusch or Kamp Vught. After the war, the camp was used as an internment facility for political prisoners. The complex has been expanded ever since.
According to my research, it has 9 units; two regular prisons, a maximum security facility, two penal psychiatric centres, a detention centre, a facility for habitual offenders, an intensive specialist care unit and a terrorist wing, spreading out 30 hectares.
It holds some of Europe’s most dangerous criminals, including Islamic terrorists Mohammed Bouyeri and Samir Azzouz, Willem Holleeder, one of the perpetrators in the kidnapping of Freddy Heineken and Ridouan Taghi, under trial for drug trafficking and murder.
